Painting and decorating is a good and respectable career. Most painters and decorators will earn a good living from their career and it is a career that is likely to last them a long time. When starting out in the painting and decorating profession you will most likely start out working for somebody as an apprentice. As an apprentice you will help the painter with any tasks he needs doing and will eventually learn everything he knows by watching and learning from him.
Another way you could start your painting career is to complete a course in painting and decorating at college. A course in the job will give you the skills and knowledge you need when you go into a job. You may not have the experience that you would gain from an apprenticeship however you will have the qualifications which will let an employer know that you have the knowledge and know what to do in certain situations.
There is always room for improvement in your painting and decorating career, you may start off in a low position however you can progress with experience. You may find yourself after some time doing more experienced jobs and being left alone to do it. You could progress to a supervisory role where you are in charge of a small team, this will bring higher pay and more responsibility to the job. After this you could become a manager of a team or even start up your own business.
Painting and decorating is a much more involved and skilled job now compared to the old days. Before a painter/decorator would turn up and only have to paint whatever needed painting however now painters and decorators are expected to do a lot more. A decorator would now have to prepare the area to be painted, protect walls and floors etc that needed protecting during painting. Painters and decorators are now normally expected to provide the paint and sometimes even choose the colour. A painter and decorator would also be responsible for clearing up after themselves once the job has been completed.
When it comes to choosing a career try to think of one which has some stability and you think you will enjoy after all your job will take up a lot of your time and will feel like it is your life. Think of something that will make you happy, have a go and try and get some work experience, if you think of a job which will make you happy then you are sure to be happy in life. You will have the passion and determination to succeed with your work.
