Interior Decorating - How to Choose Your Paint Color

By

Clients often come to me to begin their decorating project, and request to keep the paint color because they've just changed it. They tell me that it took forever to make a decision on what color to choose, and would like to build the room around it. *long suffering sigh*

DON'T DO THIS!

Yes, paint is the single easiest way to make a change in a room. When you move into a new home, it's the fastest way to remove the personality of the previous homeowner, or to make new construction feel like your own. When you're remodeling, it feels like immediate progress... and who doesn't love instant gratification?

But how do you choose? For some, standing in front of that wall o' paint chips brings on near-total paralysis - leading you to close your eyes and just grab something! For others, it's exhilarating to imagine the possibilities, so you take home one of each just to daydream about it. Either way... Resist the temptation!! It is far easier to match your paint to your furniture, than your furniture to your paint. Here's why:

If you're like most people, chances are good that the furniture you purchase is going to have to meet a number of specific requirements: a look that you enjoy, the comfort you need, and a size that is appropriate for your space. You may or may not get the choice of a selection of custom fabrics, out of which, one or two may work with your desired color scheme. What I'm trying to illustrate is that finding the right furnishings can be a challenge. Paint, on the other hand, is INFINITE! With today's technology, ANY color can be matched and reproduced instantly, giving you the ability to coordinate it exactly with your hard-won new furniture.

So, would you say that it's easier to find the perfect fabric that miraculously coordinates with your randomly selected paint color, or to select your paint color directly from that perfect fabric?

Let me boil it down: paint is cheap and easy, furniture considerably less so on both counts.

As professional interior decorators at OnlineHomeDecorating.com, we have created an entire plan for your space, which includes the paint color, so you know from the outset that all the elements of your design are perfectly coordinated... before you ever spend a dime. Now, back away from the paint chips!

Interior Decorating Ideas -

Choosing Paint Colors

For Small Rooms

By

While decorating small rooms it is very important to choose the right paint since the paint on your walls reflects your personality. The walls should look welcoming to your guests as well as appealing to you at the same time.

Painting is one of the most important aspects of the house and one of the most essential basics that you should consider when you are thinking of decorating small rooms. Paint is obviously very important for the preservation and beauty of the exterior of the house but the paint in the interior of the house is equally important.

Ideas for painting small rooms include painting at least one wall a vivid color and then using softer colors in similar shades for the adjoining walls. The boldness of the accent wall depends on your personality and how much color you can tolerate in the room. Bright color can also be added to the room in the form of artwork and furniture.

There are so many paint colors on the market today that sometimes making a choice can be quite confusing. However, it is now possible to run a computer simulation of your painted rooms so that you can decide upon a perfect choice of color for a room.

Another way to decide on paint color is to choose from the graduated color paint strips that you will find in every paint department or paint store. Take these home and hold them up against the wall as well as the furniture in the room to get an idea of how the paint would look in the room. To go a step further, some paint stores sell a small sample of paint for you to try on your walls before making your final purchase.

Remember that it is important to choose a paint color when decorating a small room that is easy to maintain. It is wise to choose paint that is durable against natural wear and tear and will last for the next several years. Keep in mind that wall color will look different depending on the lighting in the room.

Do not compromise on quality when looking for paint. It is ok to pay a little extra for a paint that will last for several years than choose cheap quality paint that will chip and show smudges in a few months. The paint on the walls should be easy to clean and maintain so that your house always looks beautiful.

The colors listed down below are said to have an impact on the mood of individuals and with the right combination, it will make for a great painting project.

Interior paint colors

1. White: This color is popular since it can be used in any room in the house. It is a neutral color, which is an addition plus, along with being able to create a peaceful atmosphere. White works well in bedrooms as well as bathrooms and can give an illusion that a room is larger. Keep in mind that white paint may be difficult to maintain.

2. Yellow: No doubt, this color will provide a cheerful feeling. This is because it's a shade that's warm and it is why many commonly use it in kitchens and bathrooms. Colors you may consider are bright sunshine or pale yellow and you may also go for a warm shade, similar to the color of a banana split.

These are just two colors that you can choose from when interior painting; however, you can also choose from brown, blue, red, as well as purple and green. If you're at lost for ideas, as far as technique is concerned, there are some options which you can consider. These will add a little flare to your painting project.

1. If you want a little texture, then try sponge painting. Do this by soaking the sponge in paint and dab the wall. You can also use rollers that have a variety of textures to make it unique.

2. Stencils are also used by many for interior painting. A good example is in the kitchen, wherein you can use a stencil that's in the shape of a fruit. The possibilities are endless and you may choose from a wide variety of designs.

Best Way to Paint a House Fast!

By

When you have an investment property, it is very important to spend the extra money to make it look nice so you can keep it rented. An empty house is a negative return on your investment.

I had a tenant move out at the end of last month. I got a call from our property management company last Friday saying they had someone who wanted to move in this Friday! Not bad having a property sit less than a month. The property management company had a list of items that I needed to either pay someone to do or do myself, but fast either way. One of those items was repainting the interior of the house because the last paint job was bleeding through and looked spotty. We got a quote to paint the house. It is not a large property...just 1112 sq ft. They wanted $1950.00 to paint the house. We decided this was far too much to pay and that we would do the work ourselves.

We completely repainted the interior of the house in one and a half days. The "we" was me and a friend. The tools we used were varied. We used old fashioned rollers, a roller that had a reservoir that you pulled the paint into and then painted until it needed refilling, and an airless contractor series paint gun with the roller attachment.

The airless gun worked well, but was heavy and required two people to move from room to room without making a mess. It also took twenty minutes to clean. I like this tool for fast exterior painting when you can afford to have overspray, but it wore me out for interior painting. Still, it gave excellent results. I do recommend cleaning the roller after each room.

The tool with the reservoir worked well and was less cumbersome. Because we bought 5 gallons of paint in one can, it required we have a smaller container to put the paint in to before sucking it into the reservoir. Overall, it worked well.

Then, the old fashioned rollers...they worked well. You had to keep going back to the tray for more paint. They took the least amount of time to clean as you could either rinse the roller to use later, or just throw it away and start with a new roller later.

The first day, we tried to paint room by room. Things were going pretty slowly and we were worried that we might not finish in our allotted timeline of being done that weekend. After two rooms, we realized this was not the most efficient method and we decided a new approach.

We decided that framing each room was the most time consuming part of the job. We both started painting along the ceiling line and around the doors and outlets. We did the rest of the house and called it a day. A very long day...

***Important note! Only frame the rooms that you have enough paint to complete. If you are low on paint, go buy more and start fresh on the next room. Otherwise, you could end up with extra work on your hands when you realize that the paint does not match perfectly.***

The next day, we went back and finished the house in just a few hours. Because we only had to focus on painting the large areas, the painting went much more quickly. After finishing, we left the house for a while we allowed the paint to dry and our eyes to adjust back to seeing normal things. When we went back, we looked for any spots that needed to be touched up and happily found that there were very few to touch up.

So, save yourself some time and make sure that you have the right tools and frame the rooms first.
