Revitalize Your Home's Exterior: Residential

Exterior Painting and Siding Staining

By

Summer months are right around the corner which means warmer weather and the great outdoors. In terms of home improvement, the warm-weather months means work to your home's exterior including exterior painting and siding staining or restoration. Your home's exterior is the first thing anyone shall see and thus it is important to actively maintain it. While there are a number of things you can do to your home's outside, two of the most common and useful services are either adding a coat of paint or restoring your home's siding. With either service, you can dramatically improve your home's visual appearance, maintaining its value, and ensuring you have an aesthetically pleasing environment to call home.

A fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference and it certainly applies to your home's exterior. Weather can cause significant damage, particularly after a brutal winter, so this time of the year is an ideal time to correct the natural wear and tear that has occurred. Exterior painting, especially in multi-level homes, can be a treacherous proposition so its recommended you leave the work the professional residential exterior painting contractors. By doing so, you can ensure that you get a professionally applied coat of paint with the protections that come with hiring a professional painting company.

While a fresh coat of paint can do wonders to the look of your home, the same can be said of restoring or staining your siding. Like a coat of paint, weather can take its toll on your siding, leaving uneven strips. New staining techniques tend to last for 5 years making it a quality home investment. Additionally, recent developments in staining products have created a variety of environmentally friendly products and a professional residential exterior company can clean, strip, and stain your siding in one package.

One can additionally stain and/or restore your home's deck. Like your home's exterior, weather takes its considerable toll on your deck and a new coat of stain can make a deck look fresh. By going with a professional deck staining company, you can ensure that your deck will be properly stripped, sanded, and stained which establishes greater longevity.

Whatever home project you have in mind, now is the time to start planning for work on your houses' exterior. Whether it's a new coat of paint, staining your siding, or staining your deck, you can have your house looking fresh and ready for the summer.

How Much Should You Save On Home Painting Costs?

By

When the walls within the house look like they need a thorough scrub or cleaning, the easiest thing to do would be to give them a fresh coat of paint. If you decide to do the task yourself, the painting will not cost a lot. Hence if you are concerned about the home painting costs and if you wish to do it yourself, you must consider the pros and cons of doing the job by yourself.

Hire It Out

This is what most people prefer to do. But if you wish to save money, then you might want to give it a try. First of all, you must determine if you have the required skills to do the job. There are some homes that have high ceilings and that will require some special skills as well as equipment. For instance, you will need tall ladders, step-ladders, drop cloths, scaffolding etc. Another important factor is the time factor and if you don't have the required time then you may not be happy with the results.

Cost Factor

There are some paint companies who charge per room and there are the others who charge per square foot. While you may feel that hiring a professional might be an expensive affair, the entire project will go on smoothly when you let a professional do his job. Added to this, you don't have to spend time and energy visiting home improvement centers and gathering materials and information. All you need to do is to simply choose the paint colors sitting within the comfort of your home and then hire a professional painter to do the job.

Cutting Corners

Although doing the job yourself can help bring down the home painting costs, you will have to be sure that you don't botch it up. A messy job will be easily noticeable and the end result might be quite frustrating. But if you only have a few walls or few small rooms to paint, then you could simply go ahead and do it yourself.

Wall Coating

Apart from the painting, one has to include the interior and exterior wall coatings while calculating the home painting costs. A coating is an additional protective layer that can help prevent your walls from being damaged. While you do the painting, it is essential that you invest a bit more to ensure that your walls are well protected. The walls tend to get damaged when the coating is not done. While there is no physical damage, the damage is normally due to changes in the atmosphere as well the environment. The natural elements such as hail, snow, rain and sun can have adverse effects on your freshly painted walls. Hence, it would be better to spend a bit more to get the interior as well as the exterior coatings done.

It does not help to merely cut down on the home painting costs but you must ensure that the money you have spent on painting, does not go in vain.

How's your house looking these days? Looking kind of murky and drab? Thinking about how much you can't wait until your kids go to college so you can paint over all the "art" they drew on their bedroom walls? Hiring painters can be the best thing you have ever done for yourself. Paint companies can come to the rescue with their professional opinion and advanced painting skills. They can save you from almost any situation.

Are you experiencing the hindrance of existing back pain due to an old car accident? Painting companies will come and do all of the work for you so you don't have to risk injuring yourself further. They can come and paint over those stupid blue flames in your son's bedroom that you had to pretend to like for so many years. They have the right equipment to cover up any existing paint job and they can get it done fast. They will come with all of their tools and equipment and have the job done in no time. You won't even have to lift a finger. Basically, the company is trained to pick out what colors are going to look good in each room based on lighting, size and even your furniture. They care about the way your house is going to look because that is their job! They even can custom mix paint for you to match any existing décor you might already have.

If you have exterior painting you need to have done, leave it to the professionals. You aren't going to want to climb all the way up high and be scraping and painting and sweating. You could fall down! The professionals have equipment that will help them get the job done quickly and safely. This means you get to save your back (and your life) and nobody gets hurt.

Painting isn't the only option that you can choose from a painting company. You can have your ceiling textured or smoothed out as well. There are different types of ceiling texture. One of the textures is a popcorn texture. This is when they make it all bumpy looking just like popcorn. You can actually use the texturized ceiling as a sound softener so it won't be so echoey in the room. You can smooth out the ceiling to add echo if you would like. Or you can smooth it for a nice clean look. There are just so many options.

Local Painters And Decorators

Interior Painting - Beyond Neutral

Home Depot Saint-Henri, Montréal

One of the most important questions proposed when deciding to finally follow through with interior painting is: what can you live or work with each day, for days on end. When determining the answer to this conundrum, we must consider which rooms we are ready to paint. Bedrooms need to be relaxing so we can achieve the elusive good night's rest as often as possible.

Common living spaces require a livelier feel so we can socialize and be creative. However, waiting rooms and lounges, in office spaces, need to reflect soothing sophistication so that patients and clients feel welcomed while simultaneously put at ease. Meanwhile, similar to home living spaces, offices and conference rooms should inspire the ideas and the dialogue necessary to collaboratively meet organization objectives.

We want to somehow please everyone...all of the time. But there are colors beyond beige, taupe, cream, and eggshell. They won't break the bank, offend or annoy because there is so much you can do with paint: mix and mute colors, stripes, sponge or stencil patterns, and faux finishes to name a few. And your local painting professionals are trained in the components of paint for different room purposes, how to achieve variety in tone and shade, as well as the most eco-friendly options for your family, or growing environmental concerns.

Interior paint consists of the solvent, the pigment, the additives and the binder. Similar to any artists' paint, the solvent (oil or water) keeps the paint in a fluid state until it is ready for use. Solvents and pigments are the easy part. The most influential aspects of interior painting are the additives and binders that give it its texture and finished appearance.

Binders are compounds such as epoxies or chlorinated rubber that allow all of the parts of the paint to stay together as one substance, for longer periods of time, on any wall or painted surface. For those of us searching for a "greener" option, the interior painting professional will actually focus more on the tint of the paint during the selection process. In eco-friendly paint, this is where a lot of VOC gases can be greatly diminish if not completely avoided from release over time.

The paints commonly used for interior painting differ only by the room in which they are used. It is widely known that the humidity and rapid temperature changes of a kitchen or bathroom would benefit from a chlorinated rubber binder or smooth, easy to clean surface. Oil-based paints dry smooth with a gloss finish so that you can wipe water or scrub a sauce that got away from you. Doorways, floorboards, and crown moldings typically benefit from a gloss or high gloss finish as well, for easy cleaning and a little more pop to their boarder/outlining effects.

Now wall and ceiling paint for any other room is up to your particular needs: Is it for sprucing up a bedroom or remodeling an office? A flat paint finish would be ideal because you can have the chalky matted finish with the durability and because it adheres the best for concealment of nail holes or dry wall imperfections. Remember that interior painting can be an opportunity to explore the decorative options available to bring about the desired ambiance of your interior space, without playing to a single bland note.

How To Paint A Room

How To Paint A Room Perfectly

By

If you're about to paint a room, then have a look first at these tips right here. You may have heard that painting a room is all about the preparation. Well, you're right, but you have to prepare the right way to ensure great results every time.

Not only this, but by using the right sequence will save you time as well.

Before you paint:

Sheen level

Make sure that you select a paint with a sheen quality that suits your rooms. Matt paints are usually better to not reveal imperfections in the wall surface. The more satin or glossier ones, which are used in wet areas, are easier to clean.

Color match

Also check that the color matches, by bringing a sample of paint to the home depot store and getting a computer match, if you're painting one or two walls in a room and need it to match the rest.

Amount

Estimate the wall size and get enough paint accordingly. Remember that you will probably be doing 2 coats, so that this into account.

Ready to paint? Ready for the tip?

Here they are:

1. Ensure that you protect the floor first. Use cloth drops or plastic sheets to cover any piece of floor that may get paint dripped on, from the doorway to where you're painting.

2. Prepare the walls by removing dust, dirt or grime with sugar soap. Scrape off any loose paint.

3. Patch up any cracks or defects with putty, wait til dry, then sand off with a fine grade paper to ensure a smooth result.

4. If there are any large defects that have been fixed and are a different color or texture/sheen to the rest of the wall, you will need an undercoat for the entire wall to ensure that your paint will result in an even finish.

5. Mask any areas that need to be protected (eg light switches) with masking tape.

6. Mix the paint thoroughly with a paint mixer. Many people skip this step and the result will be paint that will change in color and thickness as you go.

7. Put an appropriate amount onto the paint tray, not too much, and use a small brush to 'cut' or paint the edges near the cornice or ceiling, skirting boards and edges of the walls.

8. Same as step six, except more pain, and this time to use a clean dry roller for the rest of the wall. Apply an even amount and coverage as you go, and keep overlapping the edges when still wet to not get edge marks in your painting.

9. Once done, wait til dry according to the instructions, and taking into consideration the humidity and heat, before repeating for a second coat.

10. Before the paint is dry, remove the masking tape on items that have been protected by this tape.

So as you can see, these steps are simple, but are important to follow. When you do, it a more pleasant task and will give much better results. When it comes to painting, it's in the details and doing things in the right order, and with a bit of practice, you'll have beautiful results each time.

Good luck and enjoy the painting!

Housing Painting Process - The Correct Steps To Painting A House

By

Are you searching for the correct house painting process? If so then this article has information that you may find useful. The correct steps for painting a house are not complicated but if any of them are not applied you may find yourself painting your home more often than you'd like. By paying attention to the steps below and taking your time with each one you can be sure that your home exterior will be protected for several years to come!

Step One - Old Paint Removal:

Before anything can happen you must remove any old paint that is currently on your home. The best methods the removal of exterior paint is by power washing or by using a round disk tool with a sanding attachment. The power washer will remove most of the flakes and soft spot though. You can usually rent these tools for a small daily cost.

Step Two - Preparing the Surface:

After you have removed all the old material you now must prepare and make the surface area smooth before applying any primer or paint. The quickest way to smooth the surface is by using a power sander or belt sander. Sanding the surface will take some work but this is the most important part of the house painting process.

Step Three - Apply the Primer and Paint:

Now it's time to start painting! Well actually not quite, first you must apply a coat or two of exterior primer. Primer will help the paint stick better and also add extra protection to your house. Once the primer is on and dried for a day then you can s painting. The best method for most homes is to use a spray gun. If you can't or don't want to use a spray gun then using a brush will give you the best results although it will take a bunch of work and could take several days.

Final Step - Stain Application:

Paint Stain is a much more difficult product to apply to the surface than primer and paint is. Stain is very thin and much more runnier than thicker paints and primers. So take your time and use a brush, don't make a mess by trying to go to fast. The better you apply the stain the happier you'll be with your homes new coat of paint!

Well there you have it, the simple process of painting your home's exterior. Although very simple it will take some work, patience and of course some tools and products like primer, paint, and stainer! Have fun and make your project something you'll be proud of.

How to Paint a House

How to Paint a House - Proper Preparation

By

The two most important things when it comes to house painting are preparation and the quality of the house paint. At least half your house painting time will be spent in the preparation. The upside of this is proper preparation means less time actually painting and the paint will last much longer.

1. Inspection time: Take a pad of paper and a pen for a walk around your house. Looking at the whole house while paying particular attention to potential problem areas such as windows, doors, fascia boards, eaves, and edges, make a note of loose, blistered and peeling paint, signs of mold, and missing or cracked caulking. Any problems in these areas need to be addressed before you can begin actually the house painting.

2. Power washing is the gold standard of exterior preparation. Power washing the exterior is a good first step to a great paint job. However there are potential dangers when using a power washer both to the siding and to you. Do not attempt to do any power washing from a ladder. I do not believe ladders are stable enough for this purpose. If you need to power wash are areas you cannot reach from the ground, it is best to use good quality scaffolding that is properly erected and stabilized on solid ground.

Always use eye protection when using a power washer.

Never point a power washer at a person or any body parts of yours or anyone else's. (Do not aim it at your hand to see how it feels.)

Aim the nozzle downward, not up where the spray can get under the siding. Be careful around joints, edges, flashing, and caulked areas. The spray can wash away the caulk or get under the flashing.

3. Next comes scraping and sanding. Any peeling or blistered paint should be scraped off and the edges of the area sanded smooth. If your house has a rough texture, such as some rough-sawn cedar, you will need to use a wire brush to remove the peeling and blistered paint. You might have to use some sand paper to match up the surfaces.

4. Replace any rotted wood. If there is only minor damage, I clean out the rot and fill the space with wood filler.

5. Remove any problem caulk areas and recaulk with a good quality paintable caulk.

6. If you are going to be using a paint sprayer, this is the time to mask off the trim, windows, etc, that need to be protected.

7. Priming really deserves its own article. Suffice it to say you should never use a water base paint over an oil base paint without priming first and all raw wood should be primed before painting the top coat. (Rule of Thumb: You can apply an oil base paint over a water base paint, but never the other way around.)

Caveat: If you are uncomfortable climbing ladders, do not be a hero: hire a professional.

Lead Paint: Prior to 1978, the best house paint contained lead. Prepping the exterior surfaces of your house if it was painted prior to 1978 can be hazardous. The following is from the EPA website:

"Do not use a belt-sander, propane torch, heat gun, dry scraper, or dry sandpaper to remove lead-based paint. These actions create large amounts of lead dust and fumes.

Lead dust can remain in your home long after the work is done.

Temporarily move your family (especially children and pregnant women) out of the apartment or house until the work is done and the area is properly cleaned. If you can't move your family, at least completely seal off the work area.

Follow other safety measures to reduce lead hazards. You can find out about other safety measures in the EPA brochure titled Reducing Lead Hazards When Remodeling Your Home (PDF) (26 pp, 933 KB, About PDF)". This brochure explains what to do before, during, and after renovations."

With the improvement in lifestyle of the people over the years, aesthetics have played a major role in their lives. People have seem to pay close attention to things like their looks, the outfits and clothing, interior and outdoor decoration of their apartments or bungalows etc. Interior architecture of an apartment these days is given a careful consideration as people consider their standard of living to be a high priority. This includes the positioning of different objects in home, location of different rooms, themes to be applied in each room and the painting to be done according to the same. With the development of technology there are various types of paints available in the market, the latest ones being focussed on organic compounds to increase the life of the paint and reduce the indirect effects on pollution.

The new types of paints integrated with insulating paint additives which are in the form of different chemicals like thinners and thickeners, wetting agents etc. These insulating paint additives help making the paint coating more water resistant and resistant to heat. The life of these paints also increase because they become less corrosive and abrasive hereby decreasing the time span to replace the paint. Thus people generally prefer these types of paints even when they cost high because of their longer life and it benefits customers more in the long run.

Painting A Picket Fence

Point Judith, Rhode Island

Painting Your Fence With An Airless Sprayer

By: Kurt Zier

A white picket fence is a classic look for any home and really adds some design and protection for your home. A white picket fence might be the first thing someone sees as they approach your home, so you will want to keep appealing. Perhaps your white picket fence needs a fresh coat of paint, but you just really do not want to paint each slat by hand. There is an airless paint sprayer that you can use to paint your white picket fence without the hassle of doing it one slat at a time.
Before you get to painting your white picket fence, you will need to prepare the fence for painting. You can start by stripping the old paint off of the fence, using heavy sandpaper or a scraper. A scraper might be a little bit more time efficient, but sandpaper will make the area smoother. You might be able to just use an electric sander and get the job done fairly quickly and also make it smooth. If you use a sander, you will still need to be sure and get between each slat of the white picket fence by hand. After it is all looking smooth, you will want to make sure there are no places in your white picket fence that might need repair. You may have to replace a nail, screw, or staple before starting to paint the fence. If you come across a crack or a hole that is small enough, you can fill it with wood filler. There might be a crack or a hole in the fence that is that is too big for repair, and you will need to replace that slat before painting the white picket fence. Once the fence is in good repair, you are ready to start painting with the airless sprayer. First, strain the exterior wood primer and paint through strainers and into two separate buckets that have been cleaned. An airless paint spray gun has a reservoir that you will now fill with the wood primer and spray it on the fence in a fine, even mist. Before starting on your white picket fence you might want to cover your bushes, grass, or other landscaping that is around the fence to protect them from the primer and paint. As you spray the white picket fence, you should use slow up and down motions so that the primer is painted on evenly. You may have to tilt the sprayer to an angle to reach between the slats, but make sure that you are not globbing it on so that it runs and creates drips. The primer will need to be completely dry before you start spraying the paint onto the white picket fence and you will spray the paint the same way as the primer, in very even strokes. It might be better to do many thin coats, rather than one thick coat, because thick paint will run worse than thin paint. There might be spaces on the white picket fence, perhaps between slats, that will need to be touched up with a brush, so you will want to check for these spots before calling it good.
