Apply the coloured glaze to a workable length of surface.

Start at one end and pull a 4" dragging brush (or any long bristled brush) through the wet glaze. You can also perform this technique using a dry rag. Repeat several times to get the desired effect. Keep your hand as steady as you can as you drag.

Also note that if you are actually working with the full height of a wall from ceiling to base board, you can use a very wide brush, such as a wallpaper brush or even the wide end of a broom.

Repeat steps 3 & 4 on the next area. Clean the dragging brush on a rag before dragging the next area.

If applying the dragging finish to woodwork or trim, apply a coat of varnish, after the finish is dry.

Apart from the coat of paint it gets when it's newly built, houses need to painted every once in a while. Usually we do this when we redecorate, renovate, or if you just need a new coat to restore the original look. Every time we need to paint, we give ourselves an opportunity to get creative, or change the feel of something we've always felt iffy about. That being said, here are a few tips on how to paint your house so that it feels like every room really belongs!

#1 Choose a Color Scheme

The most important thing to do is to choose a color scheme. So if you like dark tones, try to stick to those. If you're a fan of pastels, try to keep things on lighter shades. Remember, you don't have to have the same color scheme for every floor of your home. So if you can't decide, you can have the best of both worlds by keeping pastels upstairs and dark tones downstairs, and vice versa.

The best pastel colors to use are yellow, blue, salmon, and lavender. More daring colors include orange and green. Living rooms work well with yellow and blue, kitchens light up with salmon or lavender, and bedroom colors can be up to the person sleeping in them.

Dark red, dark blue, dark green, and black are great colors to use for an edgier overall look. Hallways look best in dark red, so do kitchens. You can also paint different sections of the wall with your other color options so you can try them all out.

You can even make fabric accessories like pills, placemats, curtains, plates, glasses to match the theme of your walls! The sky is the limit when you are painting. Why not give it a try?

If you are not certain you will like the application in your room, a sample can be done on a piece of wax paper and taped to the wall in space to be painted. This will give you a visual to help you decide. This is a great way to get a preview of what it will look like. It may sound silly, but it is a cheap way to test it without having to paint over it. Always remember though, it is much easier to paint over a hand painted border than it is to remove a paper one!

Paint Letters, Words, and Even Phrases on Your

Wall - It's Easy!

Painted words and phrases on interior walls are one of the hottest trends in home décor. Whether it is a quote from a favorite poem or a simple word that says it all, this design trend is here to stay.

The good news is that you do not need to hire an expensive decorative painter to get the job done, nor do you need to wait for weeks for custom-made rub on wall transfers to arrive on your doorstep. This project fits into the do it yourself category, and using the simple instructions below, you can start as soon as...right now!

You will need to pick up a few inexpensive supplies - graphite paper, acrylic craft paint and paint pens, and an artist's paintbrush or two (synthetic fibers are best for using with acrylic paints). Make sure you also have plenty of printer paper handy. This project will be putting your computer to work for you.

First things first, select the word or phrase that you want. If you need some inspiration, search online. Scrapbooking and greeting card sites are both good places to start your search. When selecting a saying, let your personality shine through, while keeping in mind where the word or phrase is being used. For example, the single word "dream" would be appropriate in the bedroom above the headboard, but probably out of place in the guest bath.

Next, using your computer, select a font. There are literally thousands of downloadable fonts available for free online, so have some fun and experiment. Once you have chosen the font, play with the size in order to create a pattern. Most likely the font will need to be sized up considerably, so don't be surprised if you are only able to print one or two letters per page.

After creating the pattern, decide on the placement of the saying. Using a level and pencil (or chalk line), draw horizontal lines both above and below where the saying will be placed. Also, figure out how much spacing you want between each letter and where you want the saying to begin and end on the wall.

Once all positioning issues are resolved, you can transfer the letters to the wall. Using graphite paper under the pattern, trace the outline of the letters on the wall. Continue this process until all letters have been transferred to the wall.

And now, for the final step - painting! Use paint pens to outline the letters, then fill in with acrylic craft paints.

Voila! You now have your very own custom, hand-painted wall phrase.

So take your time and use a brush, don't make a mess by trying to go to fast. The better you apply the stain the happier you'll be with your homes new coat of paint!
