Home Decorating Supplies

Essential Decorating Supplies Explained

Author: Jessica Thomson

When it comes to decorating supplies there are the obvious pieces of equipment and then there are other devices and accessories which are easy to overlook. Obviously your choice of tools depends on the job at hand. For instance stripping wallpaper will require different apparatus from varnishing an interior door. Therefore here is a guide to the usual suspects and some handy extras in terms of decorating supplies:

When you hear the phrase decorating supplies the things that immediately spring to mind are paint rollers and brushes. One of the most popular forms of decorative domestic work is giving an interior surface a lick of paint. Brushes are useful on things like window sills and frames where detail is important and paint rollers are used where large areas are painted a single cover. Ceilings in particular are common candidates for this as the extra reach of a roller is advantageous. Both these forms of decorating supplies come in various shapes and sizes.

Other essential decorating supplies include scrapers and filling knives. The former is used for getting rid of stray bits of wallpaper and the latter is for filling in holes and cracks in plasterwork using a thick substance which sets and can be sanded - which brings us onto our next decorating supplies; sandpaper is important for getting the final finish needed for painting and wallpapering. Available in various different grains ranging from the very fine for detailed work to coarse enough to smooth out major imperfections, this can be applied by hand or using electrical belt sanders (which get their name from the belt-shaped roll of sandpaper) or orbital ones (decorating supplies which use discs of sandpaper which are rotated at high speed).

As you can imagine none of the above decorating supplies would be effective without large sheets to help reduce the mess left by decorating. Paint splatters and blobs of stray filling agent can ruin a carpet or floorboards so it is necessary to get the right fabrics to prevent your work from being counterproductive.

We have just scratched the surface of what decorating supplies need to be bought. For the above items and a range of other pieces of kit visit Decoratingsundries.co.uk.

Enhance Your Home Decor Using Decorative Paints

By

Home decoration revolves around a wide range of aspects, right from the furniture to the artifacts, appliances and even the lighting used. Apart from these decorative wall paints play a pivotal role in the decor of a home.

To understand why and how can wall paints affect the home decoration exercise you first need to know what exactly decorate paints are. These paints are an extension of the plain coloured paints applied on the walls. These come in endless varieties, textures and finishes. Using these you can create patterns, drawings of your choice on your home walls and make them look no less than piece of art.

How can these decorative paints help?

Decorative wall paints are available easily in the market and you just need to introduce them to your painting contractor or interior designer (if you feel the need to hire one). They can give you inputs on how these paints can be used and you can get the desired effect on your walls. There are a few examples of finishes that you can choose from:

* Murals: When any kind of art is directly painted over the walls to create a certain ambience it is known as a mural. So if you want to depict the Victorian era in your living room, then you can get a painting done of the similar fashion using rich colour combinations on the walls. These look stunning even on the ceilings.

* Theme based: You can make use of decorative paints to suit your theme. If you want to create a cool sea-side atmosphere in a corner of your home then you can get the perfect background by painting the walls with glossy blue or sea green. The gloss would add a different texture and if you play with the right wall colour combinations then you can achieve the desired results.

With the help of decorative wall paints you can change not just the look but also the feel of your home walls. There are a lot of texture options like stone, rustic, plaster and even embossing, this means you can make use of wall paints to paint wood and even replace the tiles.

Your home walls will no longer be left standing plain and sober; you can incorporate them in your home decoration and make your walls look alive and splendid. Elegant designs, contemporary or an arty appeal; making walls interesting is just a matter of getting them painted with the right kind of decorative paints. Gone are the days when you thought just spacious homes could be decked up; you can even make your one room apartment dazzle by painting it with the correct paints and balancing the use of other elements.

You can give your home different and new looks as you imagine by using decorative wall paints, excellent colour combinations, texture colour themes, designed patterns, etc. They all make your home painting experience creative and enjoyable.

Refinish Old Furniture With Paint

By

If you have old furniture in your house, you do not have to toss it out right away. One way that you can make your used chairs, tables or armoires look like new is to paint it. You can use a variety of different techniques when you paint your old furniture to look like new that will end up giving it a whole new look.

If you have old furniture, you may be tempted to toss it in the trash. But if you spend a little bit of time on it, you will find that you can recycle it so that it looks appealing. Painting is easy and can bring a whole new life to any old but favorite piece.

Before you start painting you will want to take out any drawers as well as take off the handles. If the furniture is varnished or has a veneer, you are going to have to paint over it with primer. Paint primer will make paint stick to anything, even tiled floors. You will need to give all veneered pieces a couple of coats of paint primer that you can find in your paint store, to get it ready for painting.

Choose a color that you will like and will brighten up the room. One choice you may want to make is to paint it a pastel color that will be bright, especially if it has been a dark piece of wood. You can simply paint it white, or you can use a variety of different techniques to get it the way that you want.

You can give the painting a distressed look easily enough. You just have to paint the furniture and then rub off certain spots with a piece of fine sand paper. This will make it look like the piece is worn. You can even paint an undercoat and then rub off some of the top coat to allow the undercoat to show through. This is often done with patina painting techniques in which a gold undercoat is used over a soft blue green color.

Crackle painting is another technique that you can use when you are panting furniture and gives the item a worn, antique look that is also attractive. You can find crackle paint kits as well as other types of decorative paint kits at your local craft store.

You can paint furniture and also paint floors or throw rugs to match the new furniture. With throw rugs, you can use a fabric dye and dye them so that they match the new decor. This is an easy way to keep the throw rugs in the home without having to get rid of them. If you have a plain area rug, you can paint a design on it and use the same design on the painted furniture.

Using stencil designs or hand stamps is one way that you can refinish your old furniture after painting. If you do not want it to look too plain, you can add a decorative paint touch. Once you start to paint old furniture, you will never get rid of old furniture again.

Interior Decorating: Understanding Paint Finishes

By

Once you've selected your colors for your room makeover you think you're past the decision portion of your interior decorating project, right? Wrong. There are a number of paint finishes you can choose from and each serves a different purpose.

So put the paint brush down and let's brush up on the most common interior paint finishes:

Flat Finish. Flat (or matte) finishes reflect the least amount of light and are a good choice for walls with imperfections - such as cracks, rough patches and dings - that need to be hidden. While some flat finishes claim to be washable, they will not hold up to hard or regular scrubbings.

Flat Enamel. Just as they sound, flat enamels have a hard, matte finish, which makes them an excellent candidate for areas that will require some regular cleaning, including guest bathrooms. It can withstand better cleaning than flat finishes, but still won't hold up as well as an eggshell or satin finish.

Eggshell Finish. By far the most popular choice for interior walls, eggshell finishes have a slight sheen and are more durable than flat or flat enamel finishes. This is an excellent option if your walls are in good condition.

Satin Finish. This finish can be used for a number of purposes - for door, wall and window trim as well as for children's rooms, bathrooms and kitchen walls. Satin finishes have a smooth finish that is specially-designed to withstand regular washing.

Semi-gloss Finish. A popular pick when paint trim around walls, doors and windows, semi-gloss finishes can also be used on kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Just be sure that your surface is properly prepared before painting since the finish's low sheen reflects light that draws attention to irregularities in the underlying surface. Semi-gloss' are very durable and clean up nicely.

Glossy Finish. Known for its highly-reflective qualities, gloss finishes are not a typical choice for interiors. They are more frequently used to paint furniture and cabinets. However, if you want to create a very dramatic modern or formal affect, this may be the choice for you.

Tips on Choosing Paint Colors for Your Bedroom

By

The colors that you choose must suggest emotions of calmness and peacefulness. However, you can also have lively and crazy colors as long as you are happy with it since it is your personal space anyway.

Following are the color groups that can be used in your bedroom.

Neutral colors consist of ivory, white, gray, beige, black and taupe. They are good to use as bedroom background color and blend with any other color. With a neutral background, you can use other colors for the room's accessories, linens, rugs, curtains, etc. to make the room brighter.

You must be aware that neutral colors have hidden shades. For example, white has shades of yellow, pink, brown, blue, etc. If you choose neutral color for your bedroom, you must know the ambiance you want for your room so you can choose the correct undertone.

Pastel colors are good to have in the bedroom because they are quiet, soothing and helps to having a good night's sleep. Pink, green, yellow, lavender and blue are all pastel colors. Accentuate these colors with vivid decorations so your room will not look too childlike. You can also have furniture made of dark wood.

Bright colors are not recommended for the bedroom. These colors will not help you to relax, as they are active and daring. Nonetheless, you can have bright colors in your bedroom depending on your personality. If you love to be surrounded with lively colors, then do so.

Choosing paint color for your bedroom

If you are not sure of the paint color to use for your bedroom, the following hints can guide you.

  • Leaf on home decorating magazines and check on the various bedrooms. See which of them appeals to you most.

  • Consider your current bedroom furniture and accessories. Check the colors that will blend with them.

  • Think of your bedroom size and the theme that you wanted to have. A small space will need a light color to make it look bigger. On the other hand, a big room can be made cozier and smaller by using dark and warm shades.

  • Does your room get enough sunlight? With enough light coming from the sun, a small room will look bigger compared to a small room that does not get enough sunlight.

  • You can also check on online decorating sites. A few of them will demonstrate what and how to do it saving you time and money.

  • You can also follow the Feng Shui guidelines when choosing paint color for your bedroom as other people do.

But whatever paint color you decide to have in your bedroom, ensure that it is something that you really like and matches your furniture and furnishings.

Visit lafurniturestore.com for more choices of home furniture as well as accessories that ranges from traditional to contemporary, modern and transitional.

Bedroom Paint Colors

By

Today, when it comes to color selection for the bedroom, you can find such a variety of bedroom paint colors. The bedroom colors available are really modern and ultra cool in the kind of rich tones and colors in which they are available.

You can choose such a combination here such as Indigo and Ochre or Coffee and Cream, Green and Orange and so on. Some very interesting bedroom color combinations that you can consider with today trendy paint colors are and Mustard and Taupe, Chocolate and Powder Blue, Burgundy and Olive Green.

However, the most common bedroom paintcolor chosen is Pink, especially when it comes to girl's room. Pink is popular because it is a very soothing color. You will find it to give off a calming effect and it is one of those shades that make your bedroom charming and cozy. The best thing to do when painting your room in pink is to have different shades of pink for different walls. Pink when mixed with yellow, gives off a beautiful apricot hue and having different wall panels in this color, intermixed with pink, gives off a great effect.

One of the best effects that you can achieve with pink is combining it with chalky green color, else combining it with light blue. Both such combinations work out very well as they are really complimentary to one another and give off an excellent appeal. Other bedroom paint colors ideas or combinations that you can try out are pink and white and pink and brown. These combinations give off a very romantic and chic effect to the room.

A point to remember when choosing the pink shade is that, if you choose a lighter shade it is far more relaxing than when you choose a darker shade. Dark or bolder shades of pink paint can be quite overwhelming and need to be balanced off with an alternative lighter shade so that the overall appearance is balanced.

You will find various types of bedroom paint colors available, but what you should choose is something that is suitable for the size and space that is available in your bedroom. Small bedrooms are better off being colored in something that is light than something that is bold as this gives off a more spacious effect to the room. There is quite a range of bedroom paint colors available, but you can find something that is suitable only by checking out as many options as possible. Check out various catalog of bedroom paint colors to select one that is correct for you bedroom space area.

Painting Your Garage Floor

Painting Your Garage Floor

By: Kenneth Collins

Today you can protect your garage floors with an almost endless list of options some of which include mats, rubber, tiles, paints etc. Painting up your garage floor can be an excellent idea to change the look of your old garage and give it some appeal, however many people think that it is a waste of money and efforts due to which they keep their garage floors unpainted. They fear that the rough environment, weather, tires and the moisture can cause the paint to peel off. Painting your garage floor can actually benefit you in the long run. It acts as a protective layer and saves it from further abuse. Choosing the correct concrete floor paint is of utmost importance if you wish it to do any good at all. You can check garage flooring Raleigh if you wish to improve your garage flooring.

Concrete floors when left untreated have a greater tendency to accumulate dirt, stains and grease. Painting your garage floors can provide a safe environment for any work to be carried out in the garage without the fear of staining the floor with oil and grease. When left untreated these floors become dirty and stained lowering the overall appeal of the garage. When you choose to paint your garage floor you must first clean it thoroughly. It must be cleaned using industrial solvents in order to remove the dirt which has accumulated in it over the years. If the floor is not cleaned properly then chances are that the paint will not effectively bond with the surface of the floor resulting in peeling of at the slightest exertion which is why you must take special care in cleaning the floor before painting it.

Choosing the correct paint for your garage flooring:
The paint that you choose must be able to stand very high temperatures as it will be exposed to the heat of the cars from its tires. Such kind of heat will be in direct contact with the surface of the paint so you must choose a paint of good quality.
The paint should be stain resistant as well. The garage is a place where fluid leaks and spills are most common which makes the garage floors most vulnerable to dirty stains and marks. A stain resistant paint will prevent such damage and help it look clean and new for a much longer period of time.

One of the best paints for garage floors is the epoxy paint. They are made from resinous and epoxy materials consisting of water based coating. Epoxy paints are known to better tolerate stains, chemicals and heat. You can also look for garage storage cabinets Raleigh for some great space saving cabinets.

Repainting Wood Fence Posts

Fence Light

Repainting Wood Fence Posts

By: Kurt Zier

Sometimes you may have a wood fence that is painted and it wears over time, needing the fence and the wood fence posts to be repainted. Repainting wood fence posts is sometimes forgotten, as people are quick to get the rest of the fence done. Repainting wood fence posts is done the same as repainting the wood fence itself. There are a few easy steps to follow when repainting fence posts and you can also follow these same steps to do the entire fence.
Before doing the actual painting of the wood fence posts, there is some preparation that needs to be done. If the wood fence posts were previously painted and it has worn off or faded or flaked off, you will need to strip the posts of the old paint. This can be done using sandpaper, a paint scraper, or both. Sandpaper might take a little bit longer but will create a smoother work surface, and a scraper will get the job done quicker. You should think about your timeline and your own wood fence posts and decide which would be the better option for you. Whatever tool you choose, go ahead and start to strip the old paint from the fence posts and the wood fence. When you have all the old paint off, you can check for any loose nails, screws or staples on the posts and the rest of the fence. Perhaps there are some nails that are necessary to hold the fence together, and in that case, you should replace them before you paint the wood fence and wood fence posts. Check for any cracks in the wood and if you find some that are large enough to be an eyesore, you might want to fill them with wood filler. Check that there aren\'t any wood fence posts that have been destroyed by the weather or by termites or anything else, and if there is one that is beyond repair, you might need to replace it before moving on to the paint. When you are sure that the wood fence and wood fence posts are in good condition you can start to paint. Use a brush and go ahead and get a thick glob of paint on it and brush it on to the wood fence posts, starting with the open grain end and moving down to the front, side and eventually the back of the post. When you are done painting the wood fence posts, you can check each one and see if you would like to add a second coat of paint and maybe even a third to further protect them from getting worn out too soon.
It is important to keep your fence and your fence posts in top shape and if your fence is painted, you might need to repaint it every few years so that it looks really nice. It is not real hard to repaint a wood fence post and if you follow some simple instructions, you can get it done properly and quickly.

Tools For Painting And Decorating

picket fence

Painting A Wood Picket Fence

By: Kurt Zier

There may come a time when you need to do a repair on a vinyl or aluminum picket fence, but on a wooden picket fence, you may need to repaint it each year as it may go through some bad weather. The heat of summer and the moisture of winter can each affect a wooden picket fence so that it will need a little bit of tender loving care to start looking new and inviting again. A picket fence is often the first thing a person might see when approaching your house and you always want it to be in top repair so it is welcoming to your guests.
The first thing to do when repainting your wooden picket fence is to strip the fence of the old paint. There are many ways to do this, such as sandblasting, using a power wash, or using a paint removing chemical, but the most typical ways are sanding the paint off and scraping the paint off. Repainting a picket fence might be something your kids would want to help with, and scraping the old paint off the picket fence is a great job for the kids to do. Put them in an old t-shirt, give them a scraper or sandpaper, and tell them you\'ll give them a dime for each slat they sand down on the picket fence. Not only will it save you a little time to go buy some supplies for your picket fence, but it will teach the kids about hard work. After the scraping is completely done, you might want to do an inspection of all the wood of the picket fence to make sure there are no nails, screws or staples that need to be removed or hammered back in. You want your picket fence to be in good repair before moving on to the next step, which is filling in any holes or dents with a wood filler. When the holes and dents in the picket fence are all filled in then you can apply a clear product that will protect your wood that you can purchase at a home repair store. After the wood protector is completely dry, you should use caulking on the cracks and splits in the wood of your picket fence so that you have a nice surface to paint. Before you apply the paint, you might want to paint on a primer, which you might be able to have the paint department tint to the same color as your paint. When you purchase your primer, you will want one that dries slowly, and when it is completely dry, you can then paint the picket fence. You will probably want to do two or more coats of paint on your picket fence, letting the paint dry in between layers.
A picket fence is a great attraction for your company and just a fun way to make your house look quaint and cozy. A picket fence that is made from wood will eventually weather over time, so you will probably want to be sure and repaint your picket fence when you notice that it is looking weathered. It is not too hard to do and is worth the time and effort you will put into it.
